Dealing with the council and utility companies can often be tricky. We hope the following tips will help you get what you need more quickly. More information about our local council can be found on the Nottingham City Council website.
We do our best to keep the information on this page up to date, although keeping up, particularly with websites, is not always possible. If you find any out-of-date information on this page, please let us know via our contact form and we’ll make corrections as soon as possible.
Council
Your Notts Directory
A great place to start when looking for information about the council is the Your Notts Directory. It’s a joint information and advice website for Nottingham City Council and Nottinghamshire County Council.
The site includes a video walkthrough and an information page.
Sherwood Ward

Parking Permits
Due to historical problems with traffic congestion, the area is now subject to parking permits issued by Nottingham City Council. Permits can either be linked to specific vehicle registration numbers or take the form of a physical permit to be displayed in the vehicle. Vehicles parked without a valid permit are liable to receive a parking fine. The first permit is supplied free of charge, and up to two additional permits can be ordered for a small fee.
Residents have reported a variety of difficulties in using the council website to order permits. However, we have had success using this link: Apply/Renew a Resident Parking Permit
Important Note: When you click the Apply/Renew a Resident Parking Permit button on the page linked above, you are redirected to a secondary website that is not part of the main council website, so your usual council login details may not work. If you are having issues logging in, use the Forgotten Username/Password feature to regain access, or as a last resort, set up a new account.
Tip: Once you have logged in and are in the process of ordering/renewing your permits, a useful tip is to tick the Council Tax Lookup Permission box before submission—this avoids the need to upload your council tax bill and instead allows it to be attached automatically.
When permits have been ordered at different times or via different methods, the website may not show all available permits. In this case, it may be more effective to call the council on 0115 876 1966 or email residents.permits@nottinghamcity.gov.uk.
Potholes and Other Road and Pavement Issues
To report a pothole, or any other road or pavement issue such as damage from tree roots, you can use the Report Road or Pavement Issues page.
As a guide, the council’s investigatory levels are around 25 mm for pavements and around 50 mm for roads, although the final decision is subject to on-site professional judgement.
Bins and Waste
Bin Collection
You can check when your bins are collected and sign up for reminders using the Check My Bin Collection Day web page.
Additional/Replacement Bins
To order additional bins, replace existing bins, or reduce the number of bins at your property, visit the Request a Removal, Change or New Bin page.
If you are a family of five or more, you may be eligible to have additional bins.
Report Bins Left on the Street
If bins have been left on the street outside of the permissible hours, please consider helping your neighbours by bringing them in for them. They may have gone away and forgotten to bring them in themselves.
Repeat offenders can be reported as antisocial behaviour, but, as set out in our Community Conduct Standards, we encourage you to have a polite, face-to-face conversation before reporting neighbours to the authorities.
Report a Contaminated Bin
If your bin hasn’t been emptied by the council, it could be because someone has contaminated it. An example would be waste in a plastic bag being put into a recycling bin. Advisory stickers should be put on your bin to inform you of this, although they are sometimes forgotten. Contamination needs to be reported as antisocial behaviour. On the council’s Reporting Antisocial Behaviour page, click Report Antisocial Behaviour (you may be prompted to log in) and complete the details as required. When asked what you would like to report, select Bins and Waste. Further down the page, you should see an option to report a Contaminated bin. The rest of the form should be self-explanatory.
Dog Fouling
Regardless of whether you call it dog poo, dog mess, dog dirt, dog waste or just plain old dog crap, it’s horrible and unhygienic. If you find dog fouling on a road or pavement, or in a play area, you can report it to the council for removal using its Report dog fouling page.
Shopping Trolleys
To request the removal of a discarded shopping trolley, use one of the following mobile phone apps:
- Trolleywise on Android or iPhone.
- Collex on Android or iPhone.
Failing that, they can be reported using the council’s Report fly-tipping or litter page.
Nitrous Oxide Canisters
You may occasionally see large, heavy metal canisters dumped around the estate. These are often nitrous oxide canisters. Nitrous oxide (N₂O), colloquially (but incorrectly) referred to as “NOx”, has legitimate uses, including in catering for whipped cream, but it is also misused by people inhaling it to get a short-lived “high”, often via balloons.
This is antisocial, dangerous, and can be particularly serious if someone has used it before driving. Possession of nitrous oxide is illegal where it is, or is likely to be, wrongfully inhaled. If you believe someone is currently driving, or about to drive, under the influence, call 999 if there is an immediate risk.
If you see dumped canisters, please use the Report page on our website and give the exact location where possible, for example: “outside 17 Arndale Road”. We will then arrange for the issue to be recorded and for collection to be requested.
Environment
Tree Services
You can make an enquiry about a tree managed by Nottingham City Council if you believe it poses an unreasonable risk to people or property. Use the Nottingham City Council Tree Services webpage to submit the details.

Damage Insurance
If you have suffered damage caused by something managed by the council—for example, through root heave or fallen branches—you can initiate an insurance claim by emailing insurance@nottinghamcity.gov.uk.
Gas
The gas mains in our area are maintained by Cadent.
Gas Leaks
If you smell gas inside or outside your property, call the National Gas Emergency Service immediately on 0800 111 999. Cadent’s What to do if you smell gas page also provides important advice about what you should and shouldn’t do.
Water
Our water is supplied by Severn Trent Water.

Road Closures
The Causeway one.network website is a useful resource for finding out about road closures. We have signed up for alerts about closures in our area and will share alerts on our various platforms where possible.
