Mansfield Road Junction

Ay-up neighbours! 👋

Following a number of reports of accidents and near-misses at the junction between Ribblesdale Road and Mansfield Road, we wrote to Nottinghamshire County Council, the body responsible for the junction, to raise our concerns. We have received a response from them, which is included below.

As you’ll see, they have said that other areas with higher accident statistics are their priority, and that they have no plans to make alterations to Ribblesdale Road/Mansfield Road junction.

We feel that this response isn’t satisfactory. We are concerned that it may only be a matter of time before there are more serious accidents at the junction, so we are reviewing our options.

Resolving this issue will not be quick or easy, particularly as it could involve coordination between the city and county councils and the police. We have a small team of volunteers looking at next steps. If you would like to be involved, please let us know by commenting at the bottom of this post.

Tarrah for now, mi ducks! 🦆

Some weeks ago someone rightly pointed out that the lights at the bottom of Woodthorpe Drive, opposite Sherwood Community Centre do include a phase to safely allow traffic from the Communty Centre to turn left/right /straight across.

If that facility can be provided there, then there should be a similar provision made for traffic coming from Ribblesdale Road.

Might you suggest to NCC they consider to apply the phasing of the traffic lights at Mapperley Plains/Gedling Road junction (which is the same sort of junction) to the Mansfield Road/Ribblesdale Road traffic lights.
This would resolve the issue of:
1- traffic turning right out of Thackerays Lane to Mansfield Road north cutting across the path of those leaving Ribblesdale Road to go straight on (into Thackerays Lane).
2-priority between those turning right out of Ribblesdale Road and those turning left out of Thackerays Lane heading for the Valley Road junction.
